The Department of Justice (DOJ) has redirected resources previously allocated to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, including transgender-specific projects, toward supporting law enforcement and crime prevention programs.
Senate Judiciary Chair Chuck Grassley (R-IA) sent a letter to the office of Attorney General Pam Bondi seeking transparency around the grant review and appeals process of the department. Grassley requested clarification on the decision of the DOJ to cut $811 million in discretionary grant funding.
As a response, the DOJ explained that during the administration of former President Joe Biden, they distributed grants supporting a range of DEI and LGBTQ+ advocacy programs.
One such grant provided $200,000 to the Diversity Center of Oklahoma to deliver culturally responsive services focused on Black and Brown women, including transgender women. Another $700,000 went to FORGE Inc., an organization supporting transgender survivors of violence, which hosted community listening sessions and created a stakeholder advisory group made up of trans individuals and service providers.
However, the DOJ, under the current administration, reveals that they already redirected resources allocated to DEI initiatives to law enforcement support. (Related: Trump signs executive order eliminating funding for schools and colleges with DEI policies.)
Organizations with ongoing DOJ-funded DEI projects will not be required to return funds that have already been disbursed under the new policy, but those that received termination notices will no longer receive additional funding. Future funds will instead prioritize initiatives that “support law enforcement operations, combat violent crime, protect American children, support American victims of trafficking and sexual assault and enhance coordination among law enforcement agencies at all levels of government.”
“The DOJ under Pam Bondi will not waste discretionary funds on DEI passion projects that do not make Americans safer,” an official from the department said. “We will use our money to get criminals off the streets, seize drugs, and in some cases, fund programs that deliver a tangible impact for victims of crime.”
This shift in funding toward law enforcement aligns with the Trump administration’s broader focus on strengthening national defense and reducing spending on ideological initiatives – marking a sharp departure from the previous administration’s priorities.
Earlier this May, the White House unveiled the discretionary budget proposal of President Donald Trump for fiscal year 2026, which includes significant increases in defense and border security funding, alongside steep cuts to programs associated with diversity, equity and inclusion.
The budget plan pledges a $113 billion increase (13 percent increase) to the Department of Defense, bringing total military spending to an estimated $1 trillion, to focus on confronting global threats, particularly from China and revitalizing the U.S. defense industrial base. Meanwhile, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) would see a nearly 65 percent increase in funding, with the White House stating that the money is essential to “repel the invasion of our border.”
In tandem with the recent move of the DOJ to redirect funds from transgender and DEI programs to law enforcement, the budget reflects a coordinated effort to, in the administration’s words, “get back to basics.”
