President Joe Biden has agreed with Pope Francis’ decision to allow blessings for same-sex unions, which to most Catholics, is a clear defiance of Church teachings.
“The president, along with many Catholics around the world, welcomed the declaration from the Vatican done with the approval of Pope Francis that allows for the blessing of same-sex couples,” said White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre. She added that while anything specific would have to be referred to the Church, “we welcome the step in the Church ministry to the LGBTQ people.”
On Dec. 18, the Catholic Church’s Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith (DDF) published “Fiducia supplicans” (Supplicating trust), a declaration on Catholic doctrine approved by the pontiff that allows priests to bless homosexual couples and certain other types of relationships. Details of the report published on Vatican News said such blessings would be permitted, albeit with caveats.
“It will be possible to bless same-sex couples, but without any type of ritualization or offering the impression of a marriage,” the report said. Furthermore, “the doctrine regarding marriage does not change, and the blessing does not signify approval of the union.”
It also said priests should decide on a case-by-case basis and “should not prevent or prohibit the Church’s closeness to people in every situation in which they might seek God’s help through a simple blessing.”
While DDF Prefect Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernandez makes clear in the document that such blessings must not be construed as blessings “proper to the sacrament of marriage,” he admits that the text’s “theological reflection, based on the pastoral vision of Pope Francis, implies a real development from what has been said about blessings in the Magisterium and the official texts of the Church.” (Related: Pope Francis allows priests to bless same-sex couples – as long as it doesn’t resemble an actual marriage ceremony.)
Christopher White of the National Catholic Reporter said: “While the Vatican’s declaration is very narrow in scope, it represents a tremendous development in both the Church’s teaching and practice, likely the most concrete pastoral shift on the Church’s stance toward gay couples in its 2,000-year history.
Since his election in 2013, Pope Francis has used an entirely different tone in talking about gay people than past popes. But this is the first time the letter of the law has been changed to signify that the Church is opening up on the matter. In an interview for a documentary film in 2020, Francis for the first time publicly endorsed giving gay people rights within same-sex unions. However, his comments at the time pertained to the civil domain and not within the Catholic Church.
Meanwhile, Biden has defied Catholic teaching by presiding over the most pro-abortion administration in U.S. history. He is an ardent supporter of homosexual unions and has even presided over the “marriage” of two men when he was a vice president. “Proud to marry Brian and Joe at my house. Couldn’t be happier, two longtime White House staffers, two great guys,” he tweeted back in August 2016.
Pope Francis, who recently celebrated his 87th birthday, warned against inflexible ideological positions that can hinder the Church from seeing reality and moving forward during his traditional Christmas greetings to members of the Curia, the Vatican’s central administration on Thursday.
He also mentioned the continuing debate between progressives and conservatives 60 years after the Second Vatican Council, which ushered the Church into the modern world.
“Let us remain vigilant against rigid ideological positions that often, under the guise of good intentions, separate us from reality and prevent us from moving forward,” he said. “We are called, instead, to set out and journey, like the Magi, following the light that always desires to lead us on, at times along unexplored paths and new roads.”
The pope added that Christians should always be restless and open to change. “The Christian faith, let us remember, is not meant to confirm our sense of security, to let us settle into comfortable religious certitudes, and to offer us quick answers to life’s complex problems,” he stated because according to him, when God calls, “He sends us on a journey, draws us out of our comfort zones, our complacency about what we have already done, and in this way he sets us free.”
Since fellow cardinals elected him 10 years ago, the pope claimed to make the Church more “welcoming to people who feel excluded,” such as members of the LGBT community. He insisted that he does these without changing any part of Church teachings on moral issues.
